The Foundation Studies department provides further education for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, who are aged between 16 – 25 years. The three pathways are designed to provide a personalised learning programme that will support learners with a range of special educational needs and disabilities. Please speak to a member of the team to see if this opportunity might be right for you.
The sessions we offer are designed to provide a personalised learning programme for every student.

Support is made available to enable equal access to our courses by students who have learning difficulties and/or disabilities.  We are able to assess individual needs and advise on matters concerning the welfare, education and social development of our students.

We pride ourselves on creating a supportive and friendly atmosphere.  This comes from the strong relationships which exist between staff and students creating a college community where each person is valued and can flourish.

Students follow individual timetables that have been designed specifically to suit the students abilities and areas of interest. The programmes are intended to develop both independent living and employment related skills, in a wide range of vocational and academic subjects.
STUDENT OF THE MONTH: BRADLEY A
Picture
Student of the month - November 2025
Bradley is a friendly and enthusiastic member of the group who consistently participates in all activities with a positive attitude.  During his morning cooking sessions, Bradley has developed his communication and teamwork skills, working effectively with peers and taking on new responsibilities.  He is now able to follow multi-step instructions and complete tasks with less support, showing increased independence and focus.
Bradley has gained valuable life skills through practical activities such as cooking, gardening, and cleaning, which support his preparation for adulthood.  His confidence has grown significantly, especially in unfamiliar settings, where he now approaches tasks with greater self-assurance and motivation.

Well Done Bradley!

The Wonkey Garden: Wins The King's Award

Congratulations to all at @the_wonky_garden on their recent achievement of receiving The King’s Award. Our students at Riverside College Foundation Studies Department are all so proud and pleased to have been involved throughout this process and application. The students get so much from our visits in regard to their physical and mental health needs along with developing many employability skills to help them progress on to adult life. We look forward to continuing with our partnership with all our friends at The Wonky Garden.

What is The Kings Award?
The King's Award is an annual award given to outstanding local volunteer groups in the UK, formerly known as the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.  It is the country's highest accolade for volunteer groups and is equivalent to an MBE.  The award is announced on November 14, the King's birthday, and recognizes the invaluable contributions of volunteer groups that make a significant impact on their local communities.

Our learning pathways
There are three pathways that are designed to provide a personalised learning programme.

They are:
Pathway to Independence:  This is focused on preparing students for adulthood and developing a range of key skills to help them live as independently as possible.  This pathway is designed for students who progress from specialist schools with small class sizes.

Pathway to Progression:  This pathway has more of an academic element and has a large focus on employability.  Students will have the opportunity to visit various businesses in the workplace and develop practical work experience.

Pathway to Vocation:  This is for students who want to continue to progress in college.  This pathway focuses on vocational skills and includes Maths & English embedded up to GCSE level.
